How much bandwidth is required for Respondus Monitor to run?

To successfully take a Canvas exam with Respondus Monitor, a high-speed broadband internet connection is required. Respondus recommends a minimum bandwidth of 2 Mbps. The most common reason for exam issues—such as freezing or disconnection—is slow or unstable internet.

For the most reliable connection:

  • Use a wired connection. Whenever possible, connect your computer directly to your modem or router using an Ethernet cable. This provides a more stable and faster connection than Wi-Fi.

If a wired connection isn’t available, here are some tips to improve your Wi-Fi performance:

  • Move closer to your router. Physical distance and obstacles like walls can weaken the signal.
  • Avoid interference. Make sure your router isn’t blocked by furniture or placed in a remote area.
  • Limit other devices. Devices like tablets, smartphones, smart TVs, and gaming consoles share your bandwidth. Turn off or disconnect them during your exam to reduce competition for network resources.
  • Pause streaming and downloads. Streaming services and large downloads can slow your connection. Avoid these activities until your exam is complete.
